Food for the Soul is a nonprofit, faith-based organization. Our mission is to fight childhood hunger, school by school, in North Texas. We do this through our Backpack Program and our Pregame Meal Program for High School Athletes. Our flagship program is the Backpack Program through which we currently provide more than 1,500 hungry DFW children with meals and snacks for the weekend. Many children participating in our program are on the free and reduced lunch program, which allows them to eat breakfast and lunch on weekdays at school. However, when the school bell rings on Friday, they could possibly go without eating until they receive breakfast again at school on Monday morning. That is 65 hours without food. And that’s where Food for the Soul steps in. Through the Backpack Program, these children and their families experience the love of others in the community intangible ways as we not only fill their bodies with nutritious food, but also fill their hearts with hope and joy. By sharing the resources that we have available to us, the children we serve find relief from their hunger and encouragement in their growth and well-being. Our Backpack Program is currently in place in Arlington ISD, Dallas ISD, Denton ISD, Fort Worth ISD, Irving ISD, Keller ISD, and Lewisville ISD.
Our Pregame Meal Program also helps us meet the needs of hungry students athletes. We started five years ago feeding the Sunset Bison football team after we got a call from a local pastor from the Gathering Church. He asked us if we could help feed a football team that was hungry with some peanut butter and jelly. Today, with donations from our partners and The Gathering Church and The Way of Truh Church, we feed 220 high school football players from Sunset High School and Kimball High School with a hot, nutritious meal before their Friday night football games. We have also started a food pantry that the players can access in the summer.
Since 2009, we have provided OVER 2.7 MILLION free meals to hungry children in North Texas communities!
